TikTok Offers The Community Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company revealed that it now features in excess of 1 thousand million AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

This change is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement coincides with a surge in AI content, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that almost 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” said a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 million media items are submitted to the app daily, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of AI content they watch by using the topic control feature in the app and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that are already be modified under the filter cover news, fashion, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules oblige content makers to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the app will from now on apply an artificially created label to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This action is designed to deter users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also introducing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its safety measures, amid debate over plans to lay off hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. The platform announced a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
