British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
